Benefits of Following a PCOS Diet

Losing weight and eating right with PCOS can be tough. The PCOS body doesn't process insulin normally, so a controlled diet should be adhered to remain healthy. But if weight loss isn't on your agenda, how can a person with PCOS eat right and how different is that diet than what you're already use to? The key for PCOS sufferers is the same non-sufferers: Balance. You don't need to go out and purchase special foods that are only for PCOS sufferers. The best thing you can do is to stick to a diet of veggies, fruit, whole grains and lean meats (stay away from processed foods, this is even more important for women with PCOS). Another good tip is to start reading food labels at the grocery store, if you don't already. Try to buy foods with high fibre and avoid low fiber foods like regular pasta and white rice. Reading food labels is just the beginning, however. You have to understand what you're reading to get the full benefit. Foods that are listed as "fat-free" sound like something you would want to add to your diet, but be careful. Most of the time, these foods are high in sugar, and that can be bad news for women with PCOS. At the same time, foods that are listed as "sugar-free" can still raise your insulin level if they contain high amounts of white baking flour or other high-carb ingredients. The best thing to do to satisfy your sweet tooth is to look for foods like sugar-free Jell-O, diet pop, Crystal Light and sugar-free popsicles because they are not only sugar free, but carb free, as well. If you can't stay away from those refined carbs, try to slow them down by adding protein or a little fat. If you have to have bread with dinner, try putting some peanut butter or, even better, hummus on it. The addition of the protein or fat will slow the absorption of the carbs into your blood stream and help keep the insulin levels down, too. Also, don't forget that not all fats are created equal. Try to stick with the healthy fats found in foods like nuts, avocados, fish, canola and olive oil, as opposed to foods high in saturated fats such as margarine, cheese, red meat and mayonnaise. Finally, some common sense tips to keep in mind when it comes to eating right with PCOS. The most important thing is attitude. Don't get down about not having your favourites and stay positive about what you can have. You will feel better, look better and be happier if you don't look at your PCOS diet as a burden, but as a chance to try new things and feel healthier. Try not to get frustrated because you don't lose weight right away, the goal isn't necessarily to shed pounds quickly, a healthy diet is a long-term eating plan to keep your body healthy. Lastly, please consult a doctor before you make any drastic changes to your eating habits or patterns. You should already have a doctor helping you with your PCOS, have him or her recommend a dietician who can help put together a diet that will work for you!

Myths About Indian Food And Why You Shouldn't Believe Them

If you have just got interested about Indian cuisine, you may have been bombarded with myths and misconceptions. Yes, it is easy to be completely mystified about what Indian cuisine is or is not. A lot of people are of the opinion that Indian food is very difficult to cook and a person who has not been born and brought up in the country will not be able to cook it. Other than this particular one, there are a lot of other myths as well, which have no relation with the truth. Here are a few myths busted about Indian food. Read on to find out what they are. 1. All Indian food is rich and oily That is so not true. The fact is that Indian food is such that one can change the richness and the oil content according to one's wishes. If you want you can cook a dish with a single or 8 teaspoons of oil. You can add a lot of masalas into a dish or almost none at all, depending on what you want on that particular day. Moreover, India has a variety of cooking techniques that require no oil at all, like steaming, boiling, roasting, grilling, etc. Indians have a variety of beautiful techniques to cook both vegetables and meats that require minimal oil but taste wonderful. 2. All Indian food is very high on the hot quotient This too is not true. Yes, Indian food uses 'masalas' but that is not something that makes dishes hot. One can easily change the amount of chillies depending on how hot he wants his food. In fact, most Indian dishes can be cooked without any amount of 'hotness' added to them. 3. Indian food is difficult to cook Yes, for a beginner. But that is true of Italian and Thai food too. In fact, any new cuisine is difficult to cook for a beginner. But as with all other cuisines, once you master the basics of Indian cuisine, it becomes easy. Once you get the hang of it, cooking simple meals is not at all difficult. 4. Forget dieting when it comes to Indian food No, that's not true at all. It is just a misconception that Indian food is unhealthy and one cannot diet while eating Indian. Also it may interest you to know that it is possible to cook simple Indian dishes with almost no spices at all!

Low Fat Diet Plan - Or Do Low Carb Diets Work Better?

The debate between low fat diet plan and low carb diets continues. And while both plans, when followed faithfully, can have you losing weight, a recent study out of Australia should help you make the choice between the two when it comes to how you'll feel while following these eating plans. The work, appearing in the Archives of Internal Medicine, finds a short-term improvement in mood for those following both diet plans, but mood improvements didn't linger for low carb dieters. Score one for low fat diets! The research involved 106 overweight or obese Australian adults of an average age of 50 years old. Randomly divided into two groups, one group was assigned a low fat diet plan they would follow for one year, while the other group was told to follow a low carb diet during the same period of time. Here's a breakdown of the two diet plans, both with the same daily calorie budget used in the study: - Low-fat diet: 46% of calories from carbs, 24% of calories from protein and 30% of calories from fat (less than 8% from saturated fat). - Low-carb diet: 4% of calories from carbs, 35% of calories from protein and 61% of calories from fat. Mood was measured during the study by evaluating subjects' total mood disturbance, anger-hostility, confusion-bewilderment and depression-dejection as well as cognitive functioning. Subjects on both diet plans also met regularly with a dietitian during the study. At the end of the year, both diet groups had lost the same amount of weight - almost 30 pounds. A nice, solid weight loss. However, when it came to mood, at first the mood measures in both groups improved, which is no surprise since the researchers expected mood to get better as the subjects saw the pounds drop off. After all, we all know how seeing results is a huge boost. But the improved mood didn't last for those on the low carb diet. By the end of the study, their mood was right where it had been before the diet started. The mood improvements did last for the dieters following the low fat diet. And though it's not clear why the mood benefits dropped off for those in the low carb group, the researchers believe that the low carb diet plan might be too hard, and too different from how the subjects were used to eating. Over time, eating this way is likely to become a burden... a lot of work and sacrifice that can be hard to maintain. "Although, in the short term, participants may have been able to meet the challenges presented by this dietary pattern, over the longer term, it may have increased participant isolation, leading to the negative impact on mood state that may provide a possible explanation for the effects that were observed," explains Grant Brinkworth, PhD of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization located in Adelaide, Australia. So, if you have a few (or more than a few) pounds to lose, and you're trying to decide on either a low fat diet plan or low carb plan, these findings suggest low fat diets might be a better choice when it comes lo dropping those pounds and keeping your spirits up.

Is the Keto Diet Right for You?

Are you interested in losing weight? Are you tired of diets that advocate low or no fats and crave your high fat meats? You may well be considering going on the keto diet, the new kid on the block. Endorsed by many celebrities including Halle Berry, LeBron James and Kim Kardashian among others, the keto diet has been the subject of much debate among dietitians and doctors. Do you wonder if the keto diet is safe and right for you? What is the ketogenic diet anyway? You must be aware that the body uses sugar in the form of glycogen to function. The keto diet that is extremely restricted in sugar forces your body to use fat as fuel instead of sugar, since it does not get enough sugar. When the body does not get enough sugar for fuel, the liver is forced to turn the available fat into ketones that are used by the body as fuel - hence the term ketogenic. This diet is a high fat diet with moderate amounts of protein. Depending on your carb intake the body reaches a state of ketosis in less than a week and stays there. As fat is used instead of sugar for fuel in the body, the weight loss is dramatic without any supposed restriction of calories. The keto diet is such that it you should aim to get 60-75% of your daily calories from fat, 15-30% from protein and only 5-10% from carbohydrates. This usually means that you can eat only 20-50 grams of carbs in a day. What can you eat on this diet? The diet is a high fat diet that is somewhat similar to Atkins. However, there is greater emphasis on fats, usually 'good' fats. On the keto diet you can have Olive oil Coconut oil Nut oils Butter Ghee Grass fed beef Chicken Fish Other meats Full fat cheese Eggs Cream Leafy greens Non-starchy vegetables Nuts Seeds You can also get a whole range of snacks that are meant for keto followers. As you can see from this list, fruits are restricted. You can have low sugar fruits in a limited quantity (mostly berries), but will have to forego your favorite fruits as these are all sweet and/or starchy. This diet includes no grains of any kind, starchy vegetables like potatoes (and all tubers), no sugar or sweets, no breads and cakes, no beans and lentils, no pasta, no pizza and burgers and very little alcohol. This also means no coffee with milk or tea with milk - in fact, no milk and ice-creams and milk based desserts. Many of these have workarounds as you can get carbohydrate free pasta and pizza, you can have cauliflower rice and now there are even restaurants that cater to keto aficionados. What are the benefits of the keto diet? If you are wondering if this diet is safe, its proponents and those who have achieved their weight loss goals will certainly agree that it is safe. Among the benefits of the keto diet you can expect: Loss of weight Reduced or no sugar spikes Appetite control Seizure controlling effect Blood pressure normalizes in high blood pressure patients Reduced attacks of migraine Type 2 diabetes patients on this diet may be able to reduce their medications Some benefits to those suffering from cancer Apart from the first four, there is not sufficient evidence to support its effectiveness or otherwise for other diseases as a lot more research is required over the long-term. Are there any side-effects of this diet? When you initially start the keto diet, you can suffer from what is known as keto flu. These symptoms may not occur in all people and usually start a few days after being on the diet, when your body is in a state of ketosis. Some of the side-effects are: Nausea Cramps and tummy pain Headache Vomiting Diarrhea and/or constipation Muscle cramps Dizziness and poor concentrations Insomnia Carbohydrate and sugar cravings These may take up to a week to subside as your body get used to the new diet regime. You can also suffer from other problems when you start the keto diet - you may find that you have increased urination, so it is important to keep yourself well hydrated. You may also suffer from keto breath when your body reaches optimal ketosis and you can use a mouthwash or brush your teeth more frequently. Usually the side effects are temporary and once your body acclimatizes to the new diet, these should disappear. How safe is the keto diet? Just like any other diet that restricts foods in specific categories, the keto diet is not without risks. As you are not supposed to eat many fruits and vegetables, beans and lentils and other foods, you can suffer from lack of many essential nutrients. Since the diet is high in saturated fats and, if you indulge in the 'bad' fats, you can have high cholesterol levels upping your risk of heart disease. In the long-term the keto diet can also cause many nutritional deficiencies since you cannot eat grains, many fruits and vegetables and miss out on fiber as also important vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants among other things. You can suffer from gastrointestinal distress, lowered bone density (no dairy and other sources of calcium) and kidney and liver problems (the diet puts added stress on both the organs). The biggest issue with this diet is poor patient compliance thanks to the carbohydrate restriction, so you have to be sure that you can live with your food choices. If you simply find it too difficult to follow, you can go on a version of the modified keto diet that offers more carbs. However, the keto diet is definitely effective in helping you lose weight. If you do not have any significant health problems except for obesity and have been unsuccessful in losing weight following any conventional diet, the keto diet may a viable option. You must be absolutely determined to lose the weight and be prepared to go on a restricted diet as specified. Even if you have any medical problems, you can take your doctor's advice and a nutritionist's guidance and go on this diet. Another study that was carried out for a longer time showed that going on the keto diet is beneficial in weight loss and also results in reduced cholesterol levels with a decrease in the bad cholesterol and an increase in the good cholesterol. Is the keto diet safe for you? Most doctors and nutritionists are agreed that the keto diet is good for weight loss over the short-term. As for the long-term, more studies are needed. Do keep in mind that obesity is not an apt choice as it comes with its own risk of health problems.
